One of the main pieces of data that we collect from students in physical education is their fitness scores. In the past, the district only tested in the fall and spring. This year, the school went to trimesters, so we will be adding a winter fitness test. Having an additional testing period will serve as a progress mark midway through the year. When it comes to recording fitness scores, my department just uses pencil and paper to record and keep track of the students progress. This is a problem because it is not very user efficient and is very time consuming when trying to analyze all the data. To solve this problem, I am going to create an online database to store the student's progress. This new database will help users track their students scores from when they enter the district until they graduate.
The first thing that I started once looking through this module was a journey map. This is a time line that I will have through out the course in order to complete my problem of practice. As we enter new chapters, I will set goals for myself in order to stay on task and on time. Each milestone is one of the five modes of design and has a conclusion date of April 28th.
When doing a quick survey of the department, I found that we have a wide range of experience when it comes to using technology. We have seven physical education teachers in our district: four at the high school, two at the middle school and one at the elementary school. In the survey, two responded that they enjoy using computers, four said they were comfortable using computers and two users said that they did not like technology. Another interesting result of the survey was that a majority of the teachers tracked their scores only in their grade book.
I also interviewed my co-worker at the middle school to see how he thought putting the students scores online could benefit the department. He said that is something that he has always wanted to do but because he wasn't too fond of technology, he just didn't know how to do it. Some of the concerns that he had was the time that it took to input the data each trimester and how often we would need to update the database. This brought up a good point because we were trying to make it easier for the users and not have it feel like a chore. The next question I asked was about how to make the department cohesive at the district level. One answer that was provided is that we should meet as a whole group during professional developments. As of now, it looks like we will be discussing this problem of practice at our next professional development day in the first week of March.
By sending out a quick survey and interviewing my co-worker I was able to learn about some of their concerns about this new system. Some of the issues that were brought up, I could really relate to such as that this project to set up will be time consuming. However, we all agree that this database will be an asset to the department and it will be a way of communicating between the three schools so that we can have a comprehensive physical education.
